Parsnips are a vegetable that are similar to carrots. They look a lot like carrots, but they are white. Their flavor, however, is different from carrots. Parsnips are much sweeter. Europeans have been cooking parsnips for a long time. They even used parsnips to sweeten food, such as cakes, before sugar became available.

The parsnip is like a sweeter white carrot. It used to be used like sugar in many European countries before many people could afford it.
