★In 1848, gold was found in California, and many people went there hoping to become rich. This was called the California Gold Rush. Many people found gold. However, it was usually shop owners who made a lot of money. There were so many people coming to California that the shops there could sell food and tools at very high prices.

Many people came to California to find gold in the late 18^th century. Shop owners made a lot of money as they sold food and tools to those people at very high prices.
